Hurricane Charlie made a path directly over both our current residence and
our property in Geneva. We only lost a few shingles at our condo in south
Orlando. There was a great amount of damage from downed trees and power lines
all over central Florida. Many buildings sustained heavy damage. The damage was
made worse by the lack of summer storms which would have normally blown out dead
branches and brought down some of the weaker trees. We were without power in
south Orlando for 4 days. The power on the road to our property was out for 2
weeks. We went out to the property the following day, and were not expecting to
be able to get through the downed trees. However, the local residents were hard
at work and had cleared a path through most of the roads before the local county
crews had a chance to get through to them. Within 2 days, the county had cleared
all but a very few roads. They spent the next few months hauling debris from
sunup to sundown, 7 days a week. We had 15 trees down on our new fence and at
least 60 - 70 trees either blown over, broken off or leaning badly throughout
the property. It took most of three days to remove the downed trees from the
fences only. The largest was over 24 inches in diameter. Almost the entire east
line was full of branches almost 6 ft deep and was totally impassable. Luckily
we had enough fuel for our tractor and chainsaw to get through the mess, as
there were virtually no gas stations that were open and they had no fuel. Though
all of this mess, our fence sustained little damage, and our equipment was
unscathed. It was a great feeling to be able to cut a large tree off the fence
and just reach down and pull the fence back into place without having to repair
broken wires. I would definitely recommend high tensile fence to anyone.
Through all of this, we didn't bother taking any pictures. We were just
trying to get everything cleaned up. We were working from daylight to dark just
like everybody else.
